Flick the Switch Wednesday Activities

On the 24th of March, our school invited the eko skola members of the Kalkara school to join us in our Flick the Switch Week Activities. The school yard was divided into 6 stations. Each station had an activity which had to do with an energy saving theme. The children were allotted 15 minutes for each station and after each activity the children were given a flashcard with one word. Their aim was to collect the six flashcards so that in the end they would be able to forma a sentence pertaining to the Energy theme.

Station 1 - Word Search on Alternative Fuels

Students (ages 7-11) were gathered under the school gazebo in the sunshine to find words hidden in a word search about alternative fuels and colour a picture depicting alternative use of Energy. The students together with the parents who were supervising this station held a short discussion about which of these fuels they knew about and whether they would be viable alternatives to fossil fuels. This activity was planned by the Head of school and Ms Stellini. Click on the icon below to take a peak at what the students had to colour on one side of the handout.

And on the other side they had a word search entitled - Alternative Energy.

Station 2: Walking is Fun

This activity was aimed at encouraging walking as an alternative means of transport that has minimal pollution and energy waste. All the students between the ages 7 to 11 participating had a walking race around a short circuit in the school to demonstrate that walking can be fast and efficient and does not require lots of use of energy. Following the race, the students commented that they were not tired as opposed to running and so walking can be used to cover even long distances. This activity involved the PE teacher and two other teachers from the Sports Promotion Unit (KMS). This activity will be publicized in school publications and events.

Station 3: Non/Renewable Energy Sources

Similarly to activity 2 above, students (ages 7-11) were gathered in school gazebo. They were asked to classify sources of energy written down on large flash cards into renewable or non renewable. This activity was prepared by Head of school and conducted by the parents. A discussion followed this activity. Incidentally, this activity forms part of the Social Studies curriculum.

Station 4: Recycle what?

For this activity students (ages 7-11) had to classify different pieces of waste into the correct category for recycling. Students did this activity very quickly. A discussion ensued pointing out that with efficient recycling a lot of energy is saved. This was planned by Ms Stellini and Ms Camilleri Lagana’ conducted it. It forms part of the Social Studies curriculum.

Station 5: Every drop counts

For this activity students (aged 7-11) were asked to carry a small amount of water around a short course around the school yard without spilling. This symbolized that water is a precious resource that uses up a lot of energy to be produced especially in countries like Malta. Mr S Borg, the Scouts leader took charge of this activity. This topic also falls under the Social Studies curriculum.

Station 6: Recycling Paper

Paper recycling is a simple process that can be done at home. This activity was a pupil aided demonstration about how paper recycling can be carried out. Students (aged 7-11) could see how the process is carried out and help to do it themselves. This activity was organized with the help of Mr J Gatt and Ms A Gauci from the Ekoskola committee.

The younger classes were also involved in this activity. A colouring book on the Switch activity was distributed to the younger students (age 6-7) and they were asked to colour the pages in it and to reflect on the drawings they were colouring. The kindergarten kids watched a group of older kids playing the Snakes and Ladders game. This was a game about energy conservation modeled on snakes and ladders provided by Ekoskola. It was displayed in the school yard and students took turns at playing it while learning about energy conservation.

Eko-friendly crafts 3: Making Robots out of old stuff

Last Friday the kids brought all their old stuff from home like buttons, toilet paper rolls, old cereal boxes, old pipes, used plastic lids, old rags. I asked them to create robots but left them free to design their robots their own way. This was their opportunity to set their imagination free. Some of the kids embraced this project with enthusiasm while others ended up crying in frustation because their robot seemed to have a mind of its own.

The Green Flag Celebration Day

7th of December 2009, marked our much awaited Green Flag Celebration Day. Attended by parents, teachers, Heads of schools, Eko-skola coordinators, local council members and the students themselves this day was a truly special one for everyone who attended this event. At around half past eight all the students from Kinder to Year 6 classes, together with all those who were invited to this important event in the history of our little school, assembled in the foyer. The Year 4 class opened the event by singing "Heal the World" by the late Michael Jackson - a wonderful song with meaningful lyrics . The Year 6 followed with their song "Healthy Food."

We were then honoured with the eloquent speeches of Dr Paul Pace, National EkoSkola Coordinator,and Mr Vincent Attard, President of Nature Trust Malta who pointed out at our eko-skola members' resilient commitment to the environment. Next, certificates were awarded to those people who had helped or supported us in our Eko skola project - namely, the local Mayor Mr Valvo, Mr JP Micallef -ex-Head of school, and Mr S Borg - the Scout Leader. Their respective speeches all revolved on the authors of this success -the students who committed themselves to actively improve the quality of life in their school.

This was followed by tree-planting in our school yard. Olive trees, our national tree is-Sigra tal-Gharghar and other trees were planted by the kids in various selected areas in the yard. We concluded our ceremony with a fun walk which started off at Zonqor area and ended at our school. It was quite a long walk but the kids enjoyed themselves immensely.

Science Festival

Today, the Year 4 and 5 classes attended the Science Festival which is being held at the University campus by the Malta Council of Science and Technology to promote science among young people. Science was present in a fun environment where children could take part in various experiments in the exhibition. Unfortunately, they could not feel the ground beneath them tremble during an earthquake simulation because it was out of order but the students were encouraged to attend this exhibition with their parents during the weekend where hopefully the simulation would be in working order again. The schoolchildren also learnt about mirages and pulleys, about how waves were generated and how wind turbines worked. Some enjoyed watching the dancing Lego robot while others enjoyed looking at their distorted images in “fat and thin mirrors”.

The festival will go on until Sunday, between 4.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. at the University.

Once upon a time, I saw a magic carpet. I wanted it because it had special powers. It was in a dark cave all by itself. I spoke to the carpet and it told me to climb on it. It took me to Spain and I saw Madrid, the capital city of Spain. I stopped there and we swam in a lake. Then, the carpet took me to an arena and I watched a bull fight there. I saw lots of bulls. Then when it was time it took me back home.

Year 4- Eco Friendly crafts - The Scarecrow

Last Friday, we worked on our third eco-friendly craft. This time we created the scarecrow which in Maltese we call 'In-Naffar'. Since on Monday we worked on a comprehension in Maltese about 'In-Naffar' I thought it would be a good idea if we continued on the same theme. If you would like to try this craft at home this is what you need:

4 old buttons or more
some straw
little rags of old cloth
scissors
PVA glue
cotton
some wool

First, the students were each given a used A4 paper and on the blank side they sketched the 'skeleton' of the scarecrow. Then they stuck some cotton in the circle on top of the scarecrow's sketched head.

Next, they placed a piece of cloth over the cotton and drew a circle around the shape of the head. Then, they cut the cloth in the shape of a circle and stuck it over the cotton. They also stuck two buttons for the scarecrow's eyes.

They also pasted some straw for the hands and the legs. The kids started creating patterns for the scarecrow's trousers and T-shirt. They swapped material and helped each other to create different scarecrows. It was lovely watching them work, share and enjoying themselves.

Finally, they added the final touches to the scarecrow like some wool for hair, a little hat, and some more buttons on the scarecrow's tummy.

Year 4: Friday cooking

Today we had our first cooking session. We prepared some stuffed potatoes.

Let's take a look at the nutritional information in a potato

If you would like to try this out at home here is the recipe:

Ingredients
4 medium sized potatoes
a small can of tuna
2 teaspoons mayonnaise
2 onion slices
salt and pepper
2 cheese triangles

Method

First clean the skin of the potatoes under running water.
Pierce skin with a fork.
Arrange potatoes in the microwave.
Microwave, uncovered, for about 6 minutes at high power.
In the meantime, combine tuna, onion, and cheese in a bowl.
Take out potatoes from microwave, cut the top part of the potato to make a sort of lid and scoop out pulp.

Mash potatoes and tuna filling until light and fluffy. Season with salt and pepper.

Fill in the potatoes with the tuna stuffing and put the potato lid on top. Enjoy!

The Eco Schools campaign originated in Denmark in the early 1990s. The idea of making school children environmentally aware was later taken over and developed by the Danish schools and the campaign spread to other European countries. The flag is an award given to those schools that achieve certain goals in relation to protecting the environment.

Yesterday 11th of November, our school was invited to attend to the Annual Ekoskola National Seminar for Malta which was held at the St Ignatius College, BSS, tal-Ħandaq Qormi, Malta. St Ġorġ Preca College, Floriana Primary and our school were awarded the Green Flag for the first time, while St Benedict College, Zurrieq Primary and St Clare College, San Gwann Primary B got the same award for their second time, making a total of 11 schools that have received the prestigious Green Flag to date.

The Seminar was officially opened by the Hon. Dolores Cristina, Minister for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport and by Hon. George Pullicino, Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs. Also present for this event was the Hon. Evarist Bartolo, shadow minister for education and the media.

Yes! We were one of four schools to win this prestigious green flag this year. A big Thank You goes to our ex-head Mr. J. P. Micallef who always offered great support to our eko-skola initiatives, to the Local Council of Xghajra, the parents in the School Council, the teachers and students, and last but not least Mrs Audrey Gauci who guided me and helped me throughout the year. We wouldn't have made it without that little help from everyone!

Dawn l-istudenti, li qed jipparteċipaw fil-programmi ambjentali tan-Nature Trust (Malta) EkoSkola u Young Reporters for the Environment, kellhom ix-xorti jaraw dawn il-kreaturi mill-viċin u jagħtu sehemhom fil-ħelsien tagħhom.

Dawn il-fkieren kienu qed jiġu rrijabilitati fiċ-Ċentru ta’ San Luċjan wara li sajjieda, NGOs, il-Forzi Armati ta’ Malta jew nies oħra ġabuhom għax kienu midruba. Il-fkieren kienu taħt l-assistenza medika ta’ Dr Anthony Gruppetta u taħt il-ħarsien kontinwu ta’ Charles Sammut, membru tal-istaff taċ-Ċentru ta’ San Luċjan. Ħamsa minn dawn il-fkieren ġew salvati mill-Forzi Armati ta’ Malta – Sezzjoni Marittima - li jagħtu l-għajnuna tagħhom meta dawn il-fkieren ikollhom bżonn l-għajnuna fil-baħar.

Dr Gruppetta, direttur ta’ General Fisheries, kellem lill-folla mdaqqsa ta’ tfal u adulti li kienu fuq ix-xwiek biex jassistu għall-ħelsien tal-fkieren. “Illum ħlisna għaxart ifkieren oħra fl-abitat naturali tagħhom. Din is-sena ħlisna 21 fekruna,” qal Dr Gruppetta. “Kienet okkażjoni rari u speċjali għalikom għax inħelsu l-iżgħar u l-ikbar fekruna li qatt kellna fdati f’idejna minn meta bdejna dan il-programm ta’ rijabilitazzjoni,” issokta Dr Gruppetta.

L-iżgħar fekruna kienet tiżen biss 1.55 kilogramm. Min-naħa l-oħra, Spartacus, l-ikbar fekruna maskili, kienet tiżen 54 kilogramma u kellhom iġorruha 4 min-nies! Il-fekruna ilha San Lucjan minn Awwissu tas-sena 2008 u kellha bżonn 14-il xahar ta’ kura biex terġa’ tiġi fi stat tajjeb li tgħix għal rasha. Princess ilha taħt kura għal din l-aħħar sena waqt li Poseidon kellu bżonn 11-il xahar ta’ kura. Is-seba’ fkieren l-oħra ma kellhomx kumplikazzjonijiet serji u setgħu jinħelsu wara biss 3 xhur ta’ kura.

Sfortunatament mhux kull fekruna jkollha storja pożittiva. Ħafna jinqabdu fi xbieki tas-sajd mormija fil-baħar, jibilgħu boroż tal-plastik u affarijiet oħra u jaħbtu ma’ inġenji tal-baħar. Għaldaqstant ikollhom bżonn iktar kura u attenzjoni. Ftit mill-fkieren meħlusa dis-sena ġew operati biex jitneħħewlhom snanar u nylon mis-sistema diġestiva tagħhom.

Il-MEPA tixtieq tfakkar lill-pubbliku li min jara jew jiġi f’kuntatt ma’ fkieren midruba jista’ jċempel 2069 9595. Dan is-servizz ta’ emerġenza hu miftuħ 24 siegħa kuljum, 7 ijiem fil-ġimgħa.
Fost ħafna entużjażmu, żewġ studenti minn kull skola preżenti ħelsu fekruna sakemm inħelsu l-għaxra li huma. Mill-iskola taghna intghazlu Nathanael Sacco, Kyle Dalli, Leanne Said u Neil Zerafa. Il-fkieren li helsu dawn it-tfal kien jisimhom Bill u Palomita. Nawgurawlhom il-vjaġġ it-tajjeb lura fl-abitat naturali tagħhom!

Year 4 - 'Heal the World' by Michael Jackson

My class has started practising the meaningful song called "Heal the World" by Michael Jackson. If the kids manage to learn the words well, we'll sing it during the assembly when it's our turn to prepare something for Tuesday assemblies. Hopefully, we are also going to sing it on the Green Flag Celebration Day which will be held on the 7th December. Below, you'll find the link to the song and you can even follow the words too. Eco-Friendly Craft - The Box Sailboat

Yesterday, my class, Year 4, continued working on eco-friendly crafts. This time we created boats from used cereal boxes. Making crafts by reusing materials that would normally be recycled or thrown away teaches kids to think before they toss something. Sometimes, things can be used for other purposes – we just need a little ingenuity!
